Welcome to the Nina Simone Blog

Press Releases 4 January 2010 | 26 Comments

Dr. Nina Simone was one of the more unique and original performers of the 20th Century. So it is an honor for us to begin this project on behalf of the Nina Simone Foundation to promote her creative accomplishments and hold up her legacy as an example of artistic excellence. What is little known is how important she was to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Often referring to her voice as a weapon, she crafted songs that became subversive narratives at key moments during the Movement. So it is important for us to highlight the socio-political significance of her life along with the pure joy and creativity of her music.

  4. “For me, the music never stops.” —Nina Simone

My friend fine artist Ralph Sanders and Nina were friends.
He traveled to Paris with her as a musician in her band.
Nina also lived with Ralph in Newark, New Jersey for a brief period while she battled with her depression.

  8. Yvette says:

As an African American with roots in Mississippi, I love Nina’s soulful, folk music, especially Mississippi Goddamn & her interpretation of Jacques Brel’s Ne Me Quitte Pas. I hope to travel to France this summer & wanted to visit the town she lived in. How long did she live in the Provence area and is there any tribute to her there (museum, house, nightclub) for me to visit?

Also, I just listened to Simone, her daughter’s singing on her website. She has a great voice and a great range Who is her father, of what nationality, and where does Simone live when she’s not touring?

  9. Carolyn Davis says:

I have loved Dr. Simone music for a long time. I have collected everything I could find over the years, so I have an extensive collection. I love introducing people to her music and have done so with my grand daughter and she loves Dr. Simone. I also like it when artist says they are inspired by her music like Corinne Bailey Ray so I tend to like them even more.

  10. The Search For Ms. Nina

Yesterday I went to the library to find books about Nina Simone. I found some books about African American Songwriters. Ms. Nina was mentioned in quite a few of them. She was in the book, “From Spirituals To Symphonies.” Written by: Helen Walker-Hill. It was about African American song artists. In the book they talked about Ms. Nina’s songs and who wrote them. I learned that Margeret Bonds wrote music for her. Another book that she was in that was interesting was, “I Got Thunder, Black Women Song Writers On Their Craft.” Written by: Lashonda Katrice Barnett. There was a whole chapter on Ms. Nina. It talked about her life and career. I found those two books quite moving.
Nina Simone was an inspiration to many people. She sung alot of songs that everyone enjoyed. One of my favorite songs that she sings is called “Sinnerman.” I was introduced to it yesterday. The only song that I knew from her before that was, “Young, Gifted, and Black.” She sang about being black and still very talented at a young age. I think this search taught me a lesson. Music today is very different from the jazz, blues, and R&B music from back in the day. Everyone had a reason for liking certain music. I like Nina Simone’s music. I am looking forward to learn more about her music.

  11. When we were searching for Nina Simone, it took a long time. It was hard to find her in books. we looked in a lot of books. I had some fun looking for her. Looking for Nina Simone was cool. I would love to do it again. We found her in 2 books. We looked in 12 books. I was happy when we found her in the “From Spirituals To Symphonies” Helen walker- Hill pg. 160. Then Josca found her in “I Got Thunder Black women song- writers on their craft” By Lashonda Katrice Barnett chapter ten pg.141. I felt good when we found the books on Nina Simone because now I can learn more about her.

  12. I think this is simply WONDERFUL!!! I am one of two recipients of the new Nina Simone Award for artistic excellence featured at this year’s YGB Awards. I am pleased and honored beyond words… she was a major facet of my family life growing up in Trinidad. My mother played her music like an anthem! As life would have it, many, many years later in the 90’s, my sister who is a sports massage therapist in Trinidad had the honor of working for Nina on her visits to the island. They became quite close. So much so that my sister organized a night out with the iconic super star. It started with dinner at the hotel restaurant that my eldest brother worked at. He cooked her meal. Then followed a surprise visit between Nina and my mother at the family house. My mother nearly had a heart attack! They laughed so loud the whole neighborhood could hear. Mummy laughed herself to tears… I couldn’t make it as I had to work overtime processing payroll… I was not amused.

When I received the call from Carl Grey in December of 2009 I was absolutely elated and thought, well gee, isn’t God great? I love this irony…

Plus particulièrement dans les années 50 et 60. Blues/Jazz
